Straight Talk, Tap into your employee idea pool

1. Hold 50/50 meetings. At a regular staff meeting, management will talk 50 percent of the time about goals, visions, and the company mission. Employees will talk the rest of the meeting, asking questions and voicing their own issues.

2. Practice MBWA (Management by Walking Around). Consider asking, "What can we do to make your job easier? How can we create a better experience for you?"

3. Work side-by-side with employees. Experience firsthand many of the concerns confronted by workers, and reduce class distinctions between management and staff employees.

4. Conduct exit interviews. Listen to why people leave. Then do something about it.

5. Use other methods that are consistent with the organization's culture. Utilize suggestion system, employee task force meetings, and employee committees.

6. Message that you are prepared to act on employee issues. The worst thing management can do is ask the questions without any intention of response, recognition, or reward.
