DIARRHEA

Any attack of frequent watery stools is called diarrhea. Diarrhea may be either acute or chronic. The primary role of nutrition is to prevent depletions of fluid, sodium, potassium and calories. Diarrhea can cause dehydration, low blood sugar and chemical imbalances that can be serious or even life-threatening, particularly in children.

Lifestyle changes:

Dietary changes: Avoiding the offending food or supplement, such as large amount of vitamin c or magnesium, or lactose intolerant, and fructose in fruit juice can bring rapid relief. While fiber is often useful for constipation, it may also play a role in alleviating diarrhea. Psyllium(9-30 gm per day) makes the stools more solid and can help resolve symptoms of noninfectious diarrhea. Avoid coffee.

Helpful Nutrients: Folic acid(5,000 mcg three times per day) has shown to shorten the duration of acute infectious diarrhea by 42%. Brewer's yeast has been shown to alter the  immune system or the flora living  in the destine and may relieve infectious diarrhea. Multiple vitamin/mineral help deficiencies that cause with diarrhea.

Helpful Herbs: Carob is rich in tannins that have an astringent or ending effect on the mucous membranes of the intestinal tract. It is often used for young children and infants with diarrhea. Commonly, 15 grams of carob powder are mixed with applesauce for children. Chamomile(2-3 grams of powdered/3-5 ml of a liquid extract to hot water and drink it three times per day), reduces intestinal cramping and eases the irritation. Marshmallow root(1,000 mg extract, capsules, or tablets three times per day) can help reduce the irritation to the walls of the intestinal tract. Red raspberry leaves are high in tannins and like their relative, blackberry, may relieve acute diarrhea.
