Drink Like a Lady, these women are well advised to limit their . . .

Moderate alcohol intake recommendation for women are only half those for men.

Why is it?

many reasons:

- Most women are smaller and have less body water than men (body water helps dilute alcohol, making it less potent).

- The enzyme that metabolizes alcohol in the stomach before it reaches the bloodstream is less active in females than males.

It's no wonder that women who drink excessively are likely to develop long-term health problems: brain, heart, and liver damage, while increasing their risk for osteoporosis.

Because alcohol also increases blood levels of estrogen among women who take hormone replacement therapy, these women are well advised to limit their use of alcoholic beverages.
