Supplements for your heart

To prevent and treat heart disease, a plant-based diet rich in brightly colored fruits and vegetables is best.

But most people need supplements as well.

Natural multivitamin/mineral formula. Select supplements with no more than 200 percent of the RDA for each nutrient and at least 20 to 100 percent of the RDA for calcium, copper, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. Take in divided doses at meals.

Antioxidants. Choose lower ranges of a wide variety of antioxidants rather than products that offer large amounts of only a few: 1 to 2 g of vitamin C, no more than 400 IU of vitamin E, 10,000-25,000 units of mixed carotenes (but no more than 10,000 units of beta carotene), 500 to 2,000 mg of bioflavonoids, at least 3 mg of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and 200 micrograms of selenium.

B vitamins with chromium. Take one balanced B complex plus chromium with meals.

Fish oil and garlic. Take 1,800 mg of EPA and 1.200 mg of DHA, plus 1,200 mg of garlic daily.

Soluble fiber supplement. Start with one-quarter of the recommended dose and gradually work up to the recommended amount.
