Window of Fertility, the best way to get pregnant

Experts believe that an egg remains fertilizable for only about 24 hours after it is released into the fallopian tubes. Sperm can survive for up to seven days, though it usually loses its ability to fertilize an egg within two or three days.

In recent study shows that women who waited to have intercourse until the day of ovulation were more likely to have early pregnancy losses, possibly because the egg has time to age - even if by just few hours - before being fertilized.

Statistically, couples who have sex most frequently before ovulation have the best odds of getting pregnant. Many doctors recommend an every-other-day regimen over daily intercourse, however, because it can take 48 hours for sperm to replenish itself, and frequent ejaculations may deplete the supply in a man with a marginally low sperm count. Giving the sperm a chance to recover is a way to play it safe without trekking to the urologist for a sperm count.

Can you pinpoint your fertile period? The classic advice has been to assume that the ovulation occurs on day 14 of the menstrual cycle (with day one being the first day of menstruation). You can notice you are most fertile when the vagina fluid is clear, slippery and stretchy with the consistency of an egg white. As a backup method, notice the changes in your cervical position-the cervix tends to soften and move up and away from vaginal opening as you approach ovulation.

It is normal for the average couple to take 4-6 months to get pregnant. However it takes longer when the woman is over 35.

Is there any way to help things along? Having sex in the missionary position so the sperm won't have to fight back gravity. Remain immobile on your back after intercourse. Douching, may decrease your odds, as it can wash away cervical fluid needed to carry the sperm to egg and alter your pH of your vagina, creating an environment that is inhospitable to sperm.

Don't forget the prospective father's role. Men can safeguard their sperm supplies by refraining from smoking, drinking alcohol and indulging in recreational drugs. Heat can also make things worse for men with low sperm counts, so it makes sense for men to avoid saunas, whirlpool baths, long sessions on the exercise bike and tight undergarments.

When to see a fertility doctor. If you are in your twenties and have no risk factors for infertility, wait a year before consulting a specialist. Seek help sooner if: - you are over 35. - you have a history of endometriosis, sexually transmitted disease or pelvic inflammatory disease.

Note: Don't jump the gun on fertility drug treatment; Clomiphene (Clomid), a popular ovulation enhancing drug, can dry up cervical fluid and make egg implantation difficult in women who don't truly need it. Fertility drugs should never be prescribed unless both partners have undergone through workups.
